Dig It!

The Regional Horticulture SHSM Program is also known as DIG IT (Discovering Innovative Green Industry Techniques). DIG IT students are selected from various DSBN schools. Students spend one semester (half day) at a DSBN greenhouse, where they are involved with a range of sector specific topics and skills. Some of the areas on which students focus include aquaponics, aeroponics, vermaculture, locally grown and Farm to Table practices, and the development of a Community Garden Program. Students have the advantage of working in partnership with several different community partners, including the Niagara Parks Commission, Niagara Parks School of Horticulture, and various Niagara Golf courses. A variety of certifications are completed while students are at the greenhouse site, some of which include Standard First Aid, WHMIS, and CPR.  Students are required to take a combination of other relevant courses, such as Math, English, and Cooperative Education, in order to qualify for the program.
